Endorsing the practitioner-scientist model, the Wisconsin School of Professional Psychology was established in 1978 by a group of psychologists in southeastern Wisconsin under the leadership of Dr. Raymond McCall, professor of psychology at Marquette University. Drawing broad support from the local psychological community who welcomed a practitioner-oriented training program, this grass-roots effort led to WSPP admitting its first class in 1980.

The WSPP is a nonprofit institution, allowing the freedom to pursue training opportunities for its students, who also serve the needs of individuals in the community who are in need of psychological help but are unable to afford it. Using community service as a vehicle to teach clinical skills is a hallmark of WSPP’s training approach.

WSPP’s doctoral program in clinical psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association. WSPP also is regionally accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools and the Higher Learning Commission. WSPP offers the Psy.D. degree with areas of specialization in either child or adult clinical psychology. The master of science (MS) in clinical psychology degree also is awarded to students en route to their doctorate degree. In 2004, WSPP began offering a four-course sequence in forensic psychology designed to acquaint students with the ways in which clinical psychologists can use their skills to assist the court system.

The WSPP school building is located on Milwaukee’s northwest side, along local bus routes with easy access to freeways and airports. The school is housed in an office building and consists of classrooms, the Psychology Training Center, business offices, library, student lounge and a conference area.
