SEATTLE — The University of Washington has chosen the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences as its new provost.
Ana Mari Cauce is a psychology professor who came to the United States at age three when her family fled Cub at the start of the Cuban revolution.
The provost is the university's chief academic officer and chief budget officer.
Cauce will replace Phyllis Wise, who left UW to become chancellor of the University of Illinois' main campus, if the UW Board of Regents approves her appointment.
Cauce has been dean of arts and sciences since 2008. UW President Michael K. Young describes her as an accomplished scholar, a brilliant teacher and a respected administrator.
She also teaches and researches in the areas of ethnic studies, Latin American studies, education and in gender, women sexuality studies.
