UO celebrates Black History Month with lectures, exhibits, music, events

From a discussion of the African American male psychology by a national pioneer in the field, to the exploration of race in Oregon football history, the University of Oregon will celebrate Black History Month with a variety of concerts, lectures, exhibits and events.

Michael Oriard, an Oregon State University English professor and former NFL player, and author Herman Brame will discuss “Race Football: National Framework for Oregon Stories” at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11, at the John E. Jaqua Center auditorium.

The speakers will examine the history of race and sports, including an integrated Oregon football team in the 1920s that made national news, and the complex relationship between race and football in the state.

“African American Male Psychology: Challenges and Conflicts in the Journey of Living,” will feature Joseph White, professor emeritus of psychology and psychiatry at the University of California at Irvine. White is a pioneer in the study of Black psychology and his seminal article, “Toward a Black Psychology,” in Ebony magazine in 1970 was instrumental in beginning the modern era of African-American and ethnic psychology.

The event will be at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, in the Knight Library Browsing Room. White was the featured speaker MLK speaker at the UO in 2012, drawing an audience of 400.
