The Psychology of mass unemployment & South Africa’s political future

High unemployment in South Africa is so often described as a "ticking time bomb" that the warning is no longer taken seriously.

What people don't appreciate is that the psychology of a mass of unemployed youth in South Africa can lead to our downfall as a nation.

From an economic point of view, South Africa is one of the worlds largest welfare states, that being the case, what do you think will happen to the masses of unemployed youth their families when they grow up. They will be a burden on the fiscus. But this is not what this article is about.

Recently there has been a spike i service delivery strikes mostly galvanized by unemployed youth, who also take this as an opportunity to loot (steal or daylight robbery) from shops. Its also critical to note that unemployed youths also constitute a large majority of people who participate in labor strikes in solidarity with the workers of a particular company.

The psychology of massive youth unemployment is a social group who are easily incited, have a lot of resentment towards a white minority and government. This psychological state or to be more precise this sociological phenomenon is as a result of alienated youth, with no jobs, no future and in intergenerational cycles of poverty, lack of education skills.

These youth are cannon fodder to the likes of political opportunists like Malema his EFF bandwagon. Remember the largest voting block in South Africa are unemployed youth who do not have loyalties to the struggle for independence so they are more likely to vote for another black party that resonates with their perceived problems and needs.

Unless the ruling party and all other progressive opposition parties like the DA, COPE, Agang, UDM and IFP realize this we might be faced with Malema as President of South Africa.

How do you think the ANC has been winning elections with a President who has so many controversies soiling his morality. Its because of the large votes he get from the people who are beholden by struggle loyalties, a large unemployed youth who are impressionable to white rhetoric against the DA and the benefitors of BEE.

Political strategists in the opposition need to deconstruct this psychological mastasis in the unemployed youth by positioning themselves as parties what have a solution to the countries high unemployment among the youth.

Let them start doing something tangible at community level to create successful transformation of unemployed youth who can be community champions to their political parties.
