Psychology: "Senior summer" can be an uncertain time

As graduating high school seniors crossed the stage and threw their tassel to the other side of their cap they symbolically began a new stage of life. After years of attending classes, studying, taking exams and participating in a structured educational program they are all free to make their own way as they choose. With 12 years of mandatory education behind them and the intoxicating freedom of “senior summer” in front of them, the possibilities seem endless!

Like any intoxicant though, even freedom and its bold sense of newfound autonomy is not without peril. At 18 years old with a newly minted sense of self confidence there is an entire world before them which does not necessarily have the structure they are used to or follow the same rules that they have operated by for so many years. As ‘70s singing artist Cat Steven’s once crooned in his song “Wild World,” “Oh baby, baby it’s a wild world ... and a lot of nice things turn bad out there.” While there is joy and celebration in the success and growth of finishing high school a bit of caution is warranted, especially during the infamous senior summer.
