HIGH POINT, N.C., Jan. 7, 2014 – Dr. Sadie Leder Elder, assistant professor of psychology and associate director of the Survey Research Center at High Point University, recently wrote an article, titled “Cups or No Cups, Anna Kendrick was Right, You’re Gonna Miss Me When I’m Gone,” that was selected the No. 1 Editors’ Choice Award Winner for the best article of 2013 by the Science of Relationships website.

The article selected for the award uses Anna Kendrick’s hit song, “Cups,” to explain why (whether they want to or not) ex-partners miss one another after a break-up. Namely, that relationship partners go through a period of disruption or disturbance that can impact the regulation of their most basic functions, including eating, sleeping and even immune functioning. The research shows that we incorporate our romantic partners into our daily routines, and they become our human timepieces. Therefore, their absence can quite literally leave us at a loss both biologically and psychologically.

Elder has been a staff writer for the Science of Relationships website since 2011. In that time, she has used her background as a social psychologist to write articles that draw connections between research on romantic relationships and real life.

“I enjoy writing for the Science of Relationships website, because I believe that it is an invaluable teaching tool,” says Elder. “I often utilize the site when covering the topic of romantic relationships in class and my students learn a great deal from the witty and insightful way the authors explain relationship science. This year, Elder wrote articles that drew from a variety of sources, including music videos, YouTube clips, TV shows and her own life to make empirically sound relationship investigations
relatable to the millions of readers that comprise the Science of Relationships’ international audience.
