The Shippensburg University chapter of the Psi Chi International Honor Society in psychology held its annual induction ceremony in the Ceddia Union Building’s Orndorff Theater on Tuesday afternoon, Feb. 24.

In a celebration for the new members, guests were also cordially invited to attend the ceremony. The inductees and their family members and friends also participated in a reception held in the lobby of the Franklin Science Center, immediately following the ceremony.

The induction’s guest speaker, Kathryn Potoczak, spoke about “being more reinforcing,” as well as not sweating the small stuff, laughing at yourself more often and celebrating each achievement in the education process at SU.

Psi Chi is an international honor society, with more than 1,100 chapters and 600,000 lifetime members located around the world. Its purpose is to encourage, stimulate, and maintain excellence in the scholarship of individual members in all fields, particularly in psychology, and to advance the science of psychology.

The mission of SU’s chapter of the Psi Chi Honor Society is to produce well-educated, ethical and socially responsible members committed to contributing to the science and profession of psychology and to society.

Involvement in the chapter promotes leadership, valued friendships, mentoring and community service, where members can gain recognition and take great pride in having helped others in their community.

The Psi Chi Honor Society organizes social events, social service activities, fundraising activities, group trips, movies, panel discussions and presentations by speakers, as well as regular meetings during the fall and spring semester.

The criteria for acceptance into Psi Chi are rigorous and not everyone may become a member of this international honors society. Dr. Toru Sato, the Psi Chi faculty advisor for SU, and senior Jackie Cheesman, president of Psi Chi, assured new members that they were joining “a group of students who is highly valued by the psychology department.” To be a member, you must maintain a consistent GPA of 3.0, overall, and a 3.20 in psychology, specifically.
