A memorial service for the professor emeritus will be Friday. Oct. 12, at 1 p.m. in the Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center.

Dr. Jay Thomas, professor emeritus from the School of Professional Psychology, died Monday, Sept. 24, surrounded by his closest family.

Pacific University will host a memorial service at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 12, in his honor. The service will be in the Taylor-Meade Performing Arts Center, with refreshments to follow on the patio. All are welcome.

Dr. Thomas spent more than 13 years as a member of the Pacific University family. Receiving his bachelor’s degree from Portland State, and his master’s and doctorate degrees from the University of Akron in Ohio, he was a dedicated teacher who helped found Pacific’s master’s degree in counseling. He mentored students and led student teams in a variety of community service activities.

He served as assistant dean of Pacific’s School of Professional Psychology and director of the school’s counseling program. He was named the 2010 Distinguished University Professor, one of Pacific’s highest honors. That year he also was appointed to the executive committee of the American Board of Professional Psychology, where he served as secretary.

Dr. Thomas retired last year and received professor emeritus status in Spring 2012.

His contributions to Pacific, his commitment to students and his expertise and friendship as a colleague will be greatly missed.
