Metro set to graduate most diverse class ever

Metropolitan State University of Denver will celebrate its most diverse fall undergraduate class in the University’s history—including 433 students of color, led by 262 Latino students—at Fall Commencement on Friday, Dec. 11 at 9 a.m. at the Colorado Convention Center.

Graduating this semester are 1,375 bachelor’s and 40 master’s students. Of the 40 master’s degrees to be awarded, 27 are in teaching and 13 are in accounting.

Kayleen Tyler, the Outstanding Fall Graduate Award recipient, will give the student address during the ceremony. Tyler graduates with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a 4.0 GPA. She has been recognized by the National Honor Society for Psychology and the International Golden Key Honor Society.

The Fall 2015 class includes a record 17 ASSET graduates, up from the previous year’s eight graduates.

The age range of the graduates is bracketed by 20-year-old Bachelor of Science in Accounting Joy Alsip and 73-year-old Bachelor of Science in Biology Robert Robinson. Consistent with national higher-education trends, women continue to outpace men, representing 57 percent of the graduates.

Transfer students make up 67 percent and veterans comprise five percent of the graduating class. Twenty seven percent of graduates are first-generation students, 28 percent are Pell eligible and 27 percent secured STEM-focused degrees.

The graduates’ top five majors in order are biology; criminal justice and criminology; accounting; psychology; and management. Ninety-eight students are seeking teacher licensure, including one ASSET student.
