Men like clever women but don’t want to date them

When they were told the woman was more intelligent, the men placed their chairs farther away and said they were much less interested in dating her.

The study concludes that smarter women may find it harder to find a potential date with these men… although we’re not sure why she’d want to settle for an insecure boy.

Frank Sinatra claimed that he liked intelligent women because “when you go out, it shouldn’t be a staring contest”.

Researchers of this study carried out their experiments in two parts.

In this scenario, the researchers noted that the men who had been told they were about to meet a more intelligent woman “distanced themselves more from her, tended to rate her as less attractive, and showed less desire to exchange contact information or plan a date with her”.

A study by the University of Buffalo, California Lutheran University and the University of Texas, Austin tested out whether men can really deal with being less smart than their girlfriend and found out that they couldn’t.

For their research, published in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin, the psychologists conducted various studies on male undergraduate students. Just like before, the men were asked to gauge their initial impressions of the women and rate how attractive or desirable they found the women to be. Suddenly, the men’s opinion toward the more intelligent women had changed.

In the hypothetical scenario, the men unanimously opted for the clever counterpart.

Although more research is required to reach a concrete conclusion, the researchers reportedly believe that “feelings of diminished masculinity accounted for men’s decreased attraction toward women who outperformed them”.

Ask The Big Question: Is masculinity really so fragile that they can’t handle a smart women? First, 105 men were asked to rank the merits of women who had out- or under-performed them in an intelligence test as a prospective romantic partner.
