Community Psychoanalysis is so named because I wanted more mental health services to be available to the general public at an affordable rate.

Many people don’t have insurance, and many practitioners who don’t take insurance charge hundreds of dollars.

As a professor, I can do this between classes and charge a lot less. i know even when they have insurance, a co-pay is usually about $50, so if I only charge $60 per session, I know I’m making it affordable. We take cash or credit cards.

Psychoanalysis is a specialty. Many years ago, in the days of Freud and Jung, they called it the talking cure. It’s a form of insight therapy. It helps the person who has anxiety, phobias and other things develop awareness, delve into the unconscious and understand what might be causing problems.

I tend to specialize a lot in panic disorders, a very common problem today. On TV, you’re always seeing some sort of pill for anxiety but that only masks the problem and doesn’t take it away.

We’re in a very accessible location with plenty of parking, on the first floor and very accommodating for people with disabilities. My hours are very flexible.

People may have a sleep problem caused by inner conflicts. These issues often cause problems at work or in a marriage, and can be treated through psychoanalysis.

I started with a master’s degree in English and I teach writing at Richard Stockton College. Freud himself believed psychoanalysis shouldn’t belong only to medical doctors, but was for people with a broader background. Mine is in education, business and performing arts. I also teach psychology at Atlantic Cape Community College.

Entry: After I got my master’s degree, I took a course in psychology and got hooked. I decided to make it a career, and got my master’s and doctorate in psychology from Walden University.

My background in counseling is largely helping kids, a lot of them exchange students. I also help as a court-appointed special advocate.

The future: Basically, I’d like to see more people than the eight to 12 people I currently see a week.
