Happiness will be subject of SUNY Adirondack teacher’s talk – The Post-Star – Glens Falls Post

QUEENSBURY — Joanne Malkani, associate professor of psychology at SUNY Adirondack, will discuss “The Psychology of Happiness” at 3:30 p.m. Monday in Miller Auditorium in Dearlove Hall on campus.

The presentation is part of SUNY Adirondack’s College Lecture Series sponsored by the college’s professional development committee. No admission is charged, and the public is invited.

Some of the questions that will be examined are, “What does it mean to be happy? Why do people spend so much time chasing happiness? Can people increase their level of happiness?”

Malkani will examine happiness from a biopsychosocial perspective, focusing on definitions of happiness, the quest for happiness and its obstacles.

Malkani has been a SUNY Adirondack faculty member since September 2005.

Before teaching at SUNY Adirondack, she was an adjunct professor at the University of Albany, The College of Saint Rose, and The Sage Colleges, teaching psychology, educational psychology, and counseling.

She was the 2009 recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Teaching, Junior Faculty.

Over the past few years, Malkani has concentrated on positive psychology, particularly happiness and mindfulness practices. She and her colleague, John Pennachio, created curriculum for a course they teach entitled, PSY 103: Psychology through Film.

The College Lecture Series offers talks by SUNY Adirondack faculty on a variety of topics and contemporary issues.
