Before Dr. Phil started dishing out advice, and before Dr. Ruth became the guru in all things sex, there was one person who paved the way for psychologists to become media personalities.

If you grew up in the 50′s, you may remember her becoming the first woman to win the $64,000 question, or perhaps later as she became a regular fixture on talk shows.

Regardless, there’s no disputing the fact that Dr. Joyce Brothers was a trailblazer in her field, as she was often called “the mother of mass-media psychology”.

“Everyone knew Joyce Brothers. She was an iconic figure,” Dr. Elyse Goldstein, a psychologist on the upper east side said.

At her funeral service today on the upper west side, those who spoke about Dr. Joyce remember her as a woman who brought to light a profession that was once in the dark.
