AAUW's speakers series

Pacifica AAUW's Speakers Series continues Monday night, Oct. 1 from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Sharp Park Library.

Please join us for an evening with Aviva Lev-David, a doctorate candidate in Depth Psychology at Pacifica Graduate Institute. Depth Psychology explores the relationship between the conscious and the unconscious in personal and collective dynamics manifested in behaviors, conflicts, relationships, family dynamics, dreams, and even social and political events. Inspired by personal, familial, and cultural experiences in and out of Home. Aviva's presentation questions how might relationships with places we have called Home are integral to personal and collective suffering and healing. Weaving images, storytelling, research, and poetry, this presentation will focus on Aviva's experiences with psyche of place and her current dissertation research with Israeli and Palestinian women within Jerusalem. The last portion of the talk will be devoted to outline a critical view of the higher educational system regarding the dissertation writing process from a feminine archetypal perspective and will allow time for QA. Aviva is married to David Hoffman of Pacifica and has just returned from several months in Israel. This event is free and the public is invited.

Free Parent Education Workshops

Pacifica School Volunteers is presenting Pacifica Parent

Academy: Workshops for Learning. These free parent education workshops will cover a variety of topics and explore ways to support your child's learning.

Leaping into Literacy: Explore and practice strategies and tools to help students develop critical thinking skills; learn to nurture reading and writing confidence and understand the new State adopted Common Core State Standards. Oct. 9th: K - 5th grade focus; Oct. 16: 6th - 8th grade focus. Mastering Math: Explore ways to foster problem solving and innovative thinking skills; understand number sense from a number line perspective and clarify the SMARTER Balanced Assessments. Oct. 10: 6th - 8th grade focus; Oct. 17: K - 5th grade focus.

Garden Club guest speaker

Claire Splan, author of California Fruit Vegetable Gardening, will be the guest speaker at PGC's Oct. 10 meeting. Splan, a resident of Alameda, will talk about growing fruit trees in the Bay Area. Her book, published in April 2012, will also be on sale. Written for beginners to intermediate gardeners, it will guide you through basics of gardening and help you select the best edibles to grow in your garden. The Big Chill Out

The Pedro Point Surf Club presents The Big Chill Out, a longboard surf classic XXII, Saturday, Oct. 6, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Pacifica State Beach in Linda Mar. Free. Great raffle prizes. Proceeds go to Ride-A-Wave, Pacifica Beach Coalition and Surfrider Foundation.

Pacifica Resource Center Rockaway Stroll

Stroll shops for silent auction items. Enjoy wine and tasty bites while listening to music by Ian Butler and The Humpbacks. Proceeds from the afternoon event, Sunday Oct. 7, from 2 to 6 p.m., benefits the Pacifica Resource Center. Partipating hosts are A Grape in the Fog, Christmas by the Cove, Hoffman's Fine Wine and Spirits, Quarry Cove Gallery, Remax Star Properties, Resurrected, Rock 'N Fit and Rock 'N Rob's. Tickets cost $30 for one or $50 for two. Price includes a glass of wine, hor d'oeuvres and entry to win door prizes. Yard and bake sale

Our Savior's Lutheran Church will be holding their 4th annual yard and bake sale on Saturday, Oct. 6. The yard and bake sale is from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 4400 Cabrillo Highway. Enter off Harvey Way at the Shell Station.

Quarterly meeting of the Pacifica Historical Society

Jerry Crow, well-known Pacifican and historian, will present "The 50-year History of Pacifica Rotary" at the next quarterly meeting of the Pacifica Historical Society. This event will be held on Sunday, Oct. 14, at 1 p.m. at the community room of the Pacifica library on Hilton Way. There is no charge and the public is invited. Don't miss this opportunity to hear about all the many activities and improvements this organization has contributed to the city in which you live.

Pacifica Historical Society Rummage Sale

Halloween costumes, decorations, as well as wonderful household items will be the focus of our next rummage sale Oct. 12-13 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Little Brown Church, 1850 Francisco Blvd. The funds raised by these monthly rummage sales are allowing the rebuilding of the north side of this 100 + year old building, soon to be the Pacifica Museum and Event Center.

Pacifica's Environmental Family to sponsor City Council candidate forum

On Nov. 6 Pacificans will be tasked with the important responsibility of electing three City Council members from a field of seven candidates. While much of the focus this year is understandably on Pacifica's financial challenges, environmental issues are always important concerns to our city, which will forever be defined by it's natural beauty.

To ensure that environmental issues get the full attention they deserve, Pacifica's Environmental Family will be sponsoring a City Council candidate forum on Oct. 2 at the City Council Chambers, from 7 to 9 p.m. All of the candidates have been invited to take this opportunity to express their vision on a number of environmental issues, such as the future of the Quarry and Sharp Park Golf Course, implementation of the Climate Action Plan, and the widening of Highway 1.

The public is invited to attend or watch the proceedings on PCT 26, which will be airing all four candidates forums this year. PCT airtimes for the rebroadcast. they are: Sunday, Oct. 7, at noon and Thursday, Oct. 11, at 5:30 p.m.

The President of Pacifica's Environmental Family (or PEF), Roy Earnest, will introduce the event, which will be moderated by Ian Butler, host of Wavelength on PCT and Chair of PEF.

Pacifica's Environmental Family is the 501(c)3 non-profit fiscal sponsor for ongoing projects in Pacifica, including The Pacifica Beach Coalition, Pacifica Gardens, Vallemar Conservators and the Pacifica Shorebird Alliance. In addition to Roy and Ian, PEF includes Treasurer Marge Davis, Secretary Sherry Flumerfelt and board members Nick Leone, Margaret Goodale and Mia Liban.

The event is co-sponsored by the Pacifica Shorebird Alliance, Pacifica Beach Coalition, Pacifica Gardens, Pacificans for Sustainable Development, Pacifica Climate Committee, Pacificans for Highway 1 Alternatives (PH1A), and the Vallemar Conservators. Questions were solicited from each of the groups and selected by the forum committee. Each candidate will be given the chosen list of questions in advance to respond in writing, and the answers distributed to the public. AAUW hosting Candidates Forum in October

The Pacifica Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) is hosting a Candidates Forum on Saturday, Oct. 6, from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Pacifica City Council Chambers at 2212 Beach Blvd. It will be televised on PCT Channel 26 with the televised time approximately from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Overnight Reno trip

St. Peter Church 55+ Club will sponsor an overnight trip to Reno on Oct. 25-26. Cost for a double room is $90 per person for members, $95 per person for non-members. Single room is $133 for members and $138 for non-members. Includes $15 cash and $8 in food credits at the various casinos. Casino stops will be the Silver Legacy on Oct. 25; overnight at the Nugget in Sparks. On the 26th, there will be a four-hour stop in Reno, then four hours at Boomtown. Bus pick-up will be 8 a.m. Oct. 25 at the St. Peter Church parking lot, 700 Oddstad Blvd. Return is 8:30 p.m. Oct. 26. Aging in Community

An introduction to 55 Older Cohousing will be presented at the Pacifica Community Center on Sept. 26, 7 to 8 p.m. Cohousing is a cooperative neighborhood of home owners who also share some common facilities, combining community and privacy. Information 359-0677.

Casa Pacifica Bazaar

The senior residents at Casa Pacifica Apartments are preparing for their 34th annual fundraising bazaar to promote their recreation and social program. The Bazaar will be from noon to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6. The Bazaar will feature handcrafted jewelry, knitted and crocheted specialties, housewares, furniture, books, clothes, shoes and many treasures and keepsakes. A Polish sausage barbecue will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, so be sure to come for this nominally priced lunch and enjoy this annual tradition. Baked goods including cookies, cakes and pies will also be available. A raffle will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, for a grand prize of $300 and many other nice prizes.

Tickets are $1 each or six for $5. Casa Pacifica is at 1060 Terra Nova Blvd.
