Colleagues, friends remember UL professor’s impact

His students, colleagues and friends describe him as a colorful character who could ignite laughter, frustration and inspiration.

Those who best knew David Greenway, a longtime associate professor of psychology at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, call him impacting and intelligent.

But above all, they say he is somebody who is memorable.

"He always made an impact. People remembered him," said close friend and colleague Rick Perkins. "I think when he passed on, it made a huge impact, sort of like throwing a stone into a pond. It affected people who didn't even know him."

Greenway, 57, died in March after suffering a stroke in December. He taught at UL for 17 years.

Greenway is being remembered during the university's Psychology Day events Wednesday and during a benefit show at Sidebar near the UL campus.

Perkins, an assistant professor of psychology, says he probably knew Greenway better than anybody.

"I knew all the good and the bad," Perkins said. "But even the bad had a good heart behind it."

For Amy Arceneaux, a counselor at Green T. Lindon Elementary School, Greenway served as more than her psychology adviser during college.

He was a patient educator and father who also rescued animals, enjoyed good music and could pull laughter from just about anybody.

"He was very wise and smart and an all-around awesome individual," Arceneaux said. "You remembered him. I still remember conversations I had with him."

Psychology Day is open to the public and includes presentations and discussions from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Griffin Hall on the UL campus. This year's theme is Mindfulness in the Modern World.

The Greenway benefit show is being held from 6-10 p.m. at Sidebar, and the $10 donation will help Greenway's family pay for hospital bills Greenway incurred after suffering a stroke in December before dying last month. Featured artists include Karl Songne, Mike Larson, Ray Maturin, Amy Lynn and Jim McGee in addition to Princess Michelliea and the Trybe Habibi Bazarre.

"The idea of the event is to honor and celebrate his life and use the opportunity to raise a little bit of money," Perkins said.
