Mysore, Feb. 19 - "Cellphones have become the biggest hindrance in the process of learning for students," contended Prof. K.S Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor, Karnataka State Open University (KSOU).

He was speaking after inaugurating a day-long counselling programme for SSLC and PU students on facing examinations, organised jointly by Jnanavani and KSOU's Department of Psychology at Tungabhadra Auditorium in KSOU premises today.

"The menace of sending SMSes through cellphones has spoiled the education scenario. Neither the teachers nor the students can concentrate in classrooms. The government should ban cellphones in schools and colleges. Technology has grown marvelously so also its disadvantages. The concept of Power Point Presentation in classroom has eroded the concept of blackboard and chalk piece which in fact had developed a bond between the teacher and students. No doubt the IQ of students is high today but the intelligence is not being channelised properly."

The programme features lectures on improving concentration, memory power by Resource Persons and Psychologists as also presenting tips on health and food habits.

KSOU Academic Dean Vikram Raje Urs, Jnanavani Director B.M. Jagadish, KSOU Psychology Department Head Dr. Man-junath and others were present.

About 500 students of the district and city are attending the programme.
