COLUMBUS GROVE — Halie Muter proudly admits she is easily inspired.

A frequent watcher of “Law and Order SVU,” she has been inspired to study criminal psychology. Just last week, the movie “Machine Gun Preacher,” inspired her to one day travel to Africa to help people there.

“I am a very inspired person,” the Columbus Grove High School senior said. “I see it as a good thing. I want to be involved in many things. I think it makes me a better person.”

Halie maintains a 3.6 GPA and is in the National Honor Society. She takes her share of advanced-placement classes and is enrolled in a psychology class at Rhodes State College this fall. She’s pretty sure she did well on her first college test last week.

“I want to major in psychology, so wanted to get a little more into it before I started college,” she said. “I feel like I am learning a lot.”

The college class has made things a little busier for Halie, who says she strives to get her schoolwork done and out of the way right after school. That includes the paper due at Rhodes each week.

“I did not expect it to be as busy,” she said. “It is hard, but I like the experience. I feel like it is getting me ready for next year.”

She keeps her grades up while working 20 hours a week at McDonald's. During the summers she works as a lifeguard at the Columbus Grove Pool.

Halie joined the school’s Quiz Bowl team for the first time this year, not at all worried about coming in a little later than most.

“I did not really ever know about it,” she said. “I thought I might as well give it a try. I am pretty smart.”

Halie is also involved at her church, Calvary Chapel of Praise in Lima. She specifically helps with the Matthew 25 program, which brings members to downtown Lima to give out lunches to needy people.

She will soon be looking for her own community project to do through the National Honor Society. She’s thinking of doing something with a soup kitchen.

Halie is applying to Miami University in southern Ohio and Ohio Wesleyan University. She said it is going to be a tough choice between the two.

Psychology seems a natural career choice for the teen who “always wants to know what people are thinking, but not in the nosy sort of way.” She will likely double major in psychology and criminal justice.
