Xavier University to offer a doctorate in clinical psychology

In a move to help rebuild mental health services in the New Orleans area, Xavier University will launch a program next fall that will lead to a doctorate in clinical psychology.

This is important, Xavier President Norman Francis said, because the region needs mental health professionals to replace those who fled the state after Hurricane Katrina.

Xavier students will be trained in a five-year program designed by the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, which signed an agreement last week with the New Orleans university to develop the curriculum. Final approval rests with the state Board of Regents.

The program is the first of its kind in Louisiana, Xavier officials said, adding that nine Xavier graduates have entered programs at the campuses that the Chicago school operates in Illinois, California and Washington, D.C., and online.

The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, a private, nonprofit institution, is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, and its doctoral program in clinical psychology is accredited by the American Psychological Association.
