Wong, Long awarded Wayne Duke Postgraduate scholarships

Nebraska's Emily Wong and Spencer Long have been selected as the Wayne Duke Postgraduate Award recipients by the Indianapolis Big Ten Community Partnership.

Wong, a senior on the women's gymnastics team, is completing her nutrition science degree and psychology/child, youth and family studies minor and expects to graduate this coming December. Wong has a 3.918 grade-point average and intends to become a physical therapist.

Long, an offensive lineman on the football team, graduated this past December with a biological sciences degree and minors in humanities in medicine and psychology. Long finished with a 3.792 GPA and plans to continue his education in medical school.

Wong and Long will be honored in Indianapolis during the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament quarterfinals on March 14.

It's the second straight year two Huskers have been selected for the award: former Husker football player Sean Fisher and cross country/track and field student-athlete Katelyn White were honored last year.

The award is named for the former Big Ten Conference commissioner who served from 1971-89. While leading the Big Ten, Duke spent much of his time working to improve academic standards and graduation rates for student-athletes. The award is an annual scholarship recognizes the achievements in academics, athletics, extracurricular activities and leadership of one male and one female Big Ten senior student-athlete pursuing postgraduate degrees.

Each Big Ten institution was asked to nominate one male and one female student-athlete for 2013, with a $10,000 scholarship awarded to each winner.
