FORT MILL, SC, January 21, 2016 /satPRnews.com/ — Rafaelina D. Cortorreal-Lopez, Founder and Therapist/Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor at Counseling and Mentoring Services, and Group Counselor/Therapist at Center for Psychiatry at Piedmont Medical Center, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Rafaelina D. Cortorreal-Lopez will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2015/2016.
Going back to school to earn her BA in Psychology from University of Phoenix, Rafaelina D. Cortorreal-Lopez graduated in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. Mrs. Cortorreal-Lopez then obtained a Baccalaureate Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling in 2013 and her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Capella University in 2014.
As the Founder of Counseling and Mentoring Services in Fort Mill, South Carolina, Mrs. Cortorreal-Lopez assists teens and families in crisis. Her role as a Therapist and Mental Health Counselor includes crisis intervention, assisting clients with setting and planning long- and short-term goals, and helping them develop coping skills, stress management skills, anger management strategies, social skills, and positive ways to improve self-esteem. As a Therapist/Counselor, she serves as a support person for clients dealing with grievance related to family death and illness, as well helping clients research available resources, such as sheLTEr, clothing, food, education, and job opportunities. Her role at the Piedmont Medical Center is to develop a therapeutic relationship with the patients in the psychiatric unit through group counseling and individual counseling, which helps Mrs. Cortorreal-Lopez get a better understanding of what they are going through and gives her important information to help tailor an individualized treatment plan for patients. She also helps patients through group activities where they learn social and coping skills and strategies that can help them reach their goals and enable them to live a normal life.
“I have a big heart for women, kids, the elderly, and all people in general,” Mrs. Cortorreal-Lopez said about why she entered into this field. “I believe in encouraging people and lifting them up in order to empower them to reach their full potential. We all have the potential to be a blessing to others, and I want to use my knowledge and experience for good purpose.”
Founding Counseling and Mentoring Services is a way to give back to society and her community. Mrs. Cortorreal-Lopez recently lost her nephew to suicide, an epidemic in America right now. With plans to organize a run/walk to raise awareness, she also hopes to begin working with her local school district to offer group counseling for those at risk of suicide, a goal that she is hoping to complete by Fall 2016.
Mrs. Cortorreal-Lopez is a member of American Psychological Association and Capella University Department of Clinical Psychology Research Gate. She is also currently working toward her Clinical Psychology PsyD with a duel specialization in Clinical Counseling Psychology and Sex Therapy at Capella University.
