William Penn Hangs on for 72-63 Win Over Hannibal-LaGrange

Oskaloosa–Dani Stahle (Sr., South Weber, Utah, History/Government Psychology) poured in 24 points to guide the Statesmen women’s basketball team past Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) 72-63 in non-conference play Saturday.

William Penn (6-5) posted a 46.3%-34.9% shooting edge over the Trojans and held on after leading by as much as 17 points in the first half.

The hosts jumped out to a 23-6 lead just over nine minutes into action, but HL-G narrowed the lead to two at halftime, 30-28. The Statesmen, who never trailed in the contest, remained ahead by single digits for most of the second stanza. WPU’s four-point advantage (61-57 with 4:05 left) jumped to ten, however, with three consecutive scores and the navy and gold held on for the victory, their third in four games.

William Penn was outrebounded by one (37-36) and overcame a 14-2 deficit in second-chance points and 17 turnovers (11 for HL-G).

Stahle finished 9-for-11 from the field (1-for-1 3-PT, 5-for-7 FT), while Brittany May (Sr., Gladstone, Ore., Biology) hit four three-pointers en route to 16 points. May also dished out a game-high five assists.

Katie Golomski (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology Sociology) added 11 points with three trifectas (also had three steals), while Jessie Kreuser (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn., Physical Education) contributed eight points and two blocked shots.

“Dani was impressive again, especially in the second half,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “We still need to learn how to play with big leads, but we continue to grow as a team. We have lots of better basketball ahead of us.”

Next: William Penn remains at home next Saturday to host Haskell Indian Nations (Kan.) in non-conference play at 2 p.m.

Statesmen Use Three-Pointers to Pull Away for 85-60 Win

Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s basketball team lived behind the arc Saturday and fortunately the strategy worked well enough to come out on top with an 85-60 non-conference win over Crossroads (Minn.) as part of the William Penn Classic.

William Penn (8-4), which has now won eight in a row, overcame being outshot 41.4%-39.2%. The hosts really struggled from the field in the first half, hitting only 26.3% of their tries, but still led 34-27 at the break.

The low-shooting clip was mostly due to WPU heaving up so many shots from the perimeter. The Statesmen were 15-for-50 from three-point land with the 50 attempts setting a new school record.

Ahead by just nine early in the second half, the navy and gold went on a 16-5 run and never led by less than 20 again, eventually going up by as much as 33 points late.

William Penn forced Crossroads into 25 turnovers (17 committed by WPU) which led to a 26-9 Statesmen edge in points off mistakes. The home squad outrebounded its foe 49-36, good for a 15-7 advantage in second-chance points.

Kelly Madison (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa, Physical Education) made nearly half of his team’s deep shots, finishing with 22 points on 7-for-15 shooting (7-for-14 3-PT).

Marc Wilson (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif.) recorded a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds in addition to four steals. He was 10-for-12 at the charity stripe.

Tyler Stahle (So., Bountiful, Utah, Business Management) reached double figures as well with 16 points, while Kevin Fay (Sr., Hennepin, Ill., Elementary Education) contributed nine points. Alec Schwab (Jr., Peru, Ill., Business Management) added six points in the win.

Blake Walker (Sr., Rose Garden, Physical Education) was kept off the scoreboard, but did plenty of damage distributing the ball, ending the game with nine assists. Mike Aldeman (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Education) matched Wilson with four steals.

“I want to thank my assistant coaches and all the William Penn employees and staff who helped with all the games this weekend,” Head Coach John Henry said. “They took time away from their families on this holiday weekend to host these games.”

Next: William Penn remains at home Wednesday to host Central in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
