Bagpipers on Saturday afternoon led undergraduates from the Wilkes University Center on Main in Wilkes-Barre to the sports and conference center a few blocks away on South Franklin Street.
Some graduates posed for cameras wielded by family members and slapped their friends high-fives as the bagpipes petered out. They shuffled into the auditorium that was packed with hundreds of friends and family and an air horn sounded outside — then again inside.
Wilkes University awarded 679 bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees at its 68th spring commencement ceremonies. The ceremony for undergraduates receiving bachelor’s degrees followed the graduate commencement earlier in the day.
Kayla Rooney of Long Pond, Wayne County, who was presented with the Alumni Award for Leadership, gave remarks on behalf of her senior class.
She was graduating with majors in international studies and political science.
She told her peers that they should be proud of their accomplishment. Most had spent around the last 16 years in school and now it was on to the next chapter. She told them to look at their freshman identification card and look at how much they had changed over the past four years.
“Treasure those times because they all culminated to this point, but embrace what is to come,” she said. “...Venture out into the great unknown — because that’s what makes it great, right? The ability to pursue whatever it is you want. Nothing will hold you back — well, maybe your student loans.”
Among those to receive degrees Saturday, only a handful walked away with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
Christine Bergey, of Kingston, was one of three undergraduates — and the only student from Luzerne County — to achieve the perfect GPA, and in the university’s history, only 55 had done so as of Saturday. Bergey graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree, summa cum laude, with a major in biology and will attend the University of Maryland School of Dentistry in the fall.
