Western U tackles how your lover can make a day better — without saying a word

Feeling sluggish and grumpy at work?

Stop for just a second. Think about your lover, and you just might notice a big difference.

That’s the promise from a team of Western University researchers who say the mere thought of your lover generates “good stress,” which in turn gives you energy and improves your mood.

Researchers tracked blood glucose levels of 183 study participants and found that levels increased when they thought about their partner. When asked to think about a friend or, say, their morning routine, blood glucose levels actually declined.

Sarah Stanton, the psychology graduate student who led the research team, believes the findings will help psychologists better understand how we relate to one another.

“Essentially, love gives you a ‘rush’ both physically and psychologically,” says Stanton. “The ‘stress’ of love is linked with positive emotions, not negative emotions of any kind.”

The study showed people can experience eustress — that’s a fancy word for good or euphoric stress — after being with a romantic partner for a considerable amount of time.

Previous research had shown that all those positive vibes usually wear off after the first six months of a relationship.
