UTPB professor examines perceptions

University of Texas of the Permian Basin assistant psychology professor Jamie Hughes’ research into how people make sense of other’s actions and decide what they think helped her win this year’s LaMancha Society Golden Windmill Award.

A social psychologist, Hughes has been at UTPB since 2012. She received the award, which includes a certificate and a $1,500 grant to support travel or research, earlier this week at the university’s 39th Annual Honors Convocation.

Hughes earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Michigan State University in East Lansing, Mich., a master’s in quantitative psychology from Illinois State University in Normal, Ill., and a doctorate in social psychology from New Mexico State University in Las Cruces.

She said she was somewhat surprised to be selected for the laurel.

“I’m really happy because the funds that are associated with it will probably fund my research for a year,” Hughes said.

Members of the committee contribute to the monetary award, as does UTPB President David Watts, he said. The LaMancha award was established 25 years ago and recognizes an early career researcher for being productive and promising, Hughes said.
