What makes a group worth dying for?

UT-Austin psychology professor William Swann explores this question in What Makes a Group Worth Dying For? at noon Friday in University Hall Room 10.

Swann will discuss the concepts of his research on identity fusion theory. This deals with individuals becoming invested in, or fused with, larger concepts or groups. Identity fusion can reduce an individual’s sense of self-preservation. Examples can be found in many areas, from religion to the military.

“Heavy investment in identity and success of the group means people are less likely to disagree with what the group is deciding,” psychology associate professor Jared Kenworthy said.

Swann has studied identity negotiation theory, the process by which individuals figure out their roles in a group. But his best-known research is on identity verification, which involves a person’s desire to be known and recognized by others.

The discussion is the first of the Psychology department’s yearlong colloquium series.
