UoP produces four PhDs in a single day

PESHAWAR, July 4: The University of Peshawar on Thursday achieved a distinction amongst the educational institutions of the country by awarding PhD degrees to four scholars in a single day.

After successful defence of their theses, held at the institute of chemical sciences, centre of biotechnology and microbiology and department of psychology, the scholars were recommended for the award of PhD degrees. Three out of the four PhD scholars, recommended for award of degrees, were female researchers of the university, said a press release issued by UoP.

The topic of the thesis of Sadia Rehman was ‘Synthesis, characterisation and biological evaluation of transition metal complexes of modified coumarins’. Dr Saeedur Rehman of the institute of chemical sciences, UoP, was her supervisor while Dr Zahid Hussain of the department of chemistry, Bahauddin Zakriya University, Multan was her external examiner.

Another scholar Fazl Wahid of the same department conducted research on ‘Solid phase extraction of heavy metals using low cost sorbents’. The director of institute of chemical sciences, Dr Imdadullah, was his supervisor while Dr Izzat Khan, assistant professor at Malakand University, was his external examiner.

Scholar Farah Naz was recommended for award of PhD in psychology after successful public defence of her thesis. The topic of her research was ‘Development of multidimensional religiosity scale’. The objective of her study was to develop multidimensional religiosity scale and establish its psychometric properties to measure the religious orientation of Muslims.

Shaheed Benazir Women University Vice-chancellor Dr Farhana Jehangir was her supervisor while Dr Tahir Khalil, the chairman of department of psychology, International Islamic University Islamabad was her external examiner.

Johar Jamil of centre of biotechnology and microbiology conducted research on ‘Molecular epidemiology of antibiotic resistant genes in pathogenic bacteria (A case study of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa).

The director centre of biotechnology and microbiology, Dr Bashir Ahmed, was her supervisor and Dr Jawad Ahmed of Khyber Medical University, Peshawar worked as her co-supervisor while Dr Noor Mohammad, the chairman of department of biotechnology, Kohat University of Science and Technology served as her external examiner.
