UNM professor opens neuropsychology firm in Albuquerque

A University of New Mexico professor has opened a new neuropsychology firm in Albuquerque.

Located at 700 Lomas Blvd. NE, Brain and Behavioral Associates PC focuses on the treatment of behavioral and cognitive effects caused by traumatic brain injuries, strokes, neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis, and other conditions. Started by Rex Jung, assistant professor of neurosurgery at UNM, the firm also offers legal consultation services in the area of forensic neuropsychology.

Jung says he transitioned into private practice to fill what he says is a tremendous need for timely neuropsychology services both in Albuquerque and New Mexico. Outside of neuropsychological services provided at the hospital level, few independent firms exist in Albuquerque.

"There’s always been a huge need for these services in Albuquerque. Most neuropsychologists in town — and there's only a few — are scheduled out nine months to a year in patient backlogs. I want to provide a timely service while the patient is still recovering from the injury. It's very important to do that," he said. While still affiliated with UNM, Jung said that moving into private practice has allowed him the freedom to see a broader range of patients, as well offer more legal consulting services — for example, reviewing legal cases where brain function is a factor.

The new firm employs four, including Jung, and will likely bring on more staff as the practice grows. Jung said his services are booked two-to-three months out right now. As a tertiary practice, doctor referrals — primary or specialty — are preferred.
