KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — A professor of psychology at the University of Tennessee says families can often avoid problems over the holidays by talking through potential conflicts before they happen.

She said they also should analyze limitations and maximize what can be done.

Kristi Gordon suggests couples discuss how much to spend on gifts before shopping. She said they also should analyze limitations and maximize what can be done.

Additionally, Gordon said divvying up time for both families should be worked out when each spouse is calm, respectful and can communicate without blaming.

Spouses from different faiths should maximize the happiness for both individuals, she suggests.
