Understanding the psychology of hate

Dr. Jeff Daly broke down the psychology of hate on Tuesday as it relates to the suspect in the recent South Carolina shooting that left nine people dead inside a historic black church.

Daly said hate and racism are certainly two determining factors in the reason for the homicidal behavior of the South Carolina shooter, but that hate alone is not enough to explain the killer's actions. He said that an unknown combination of other factors can lead to homicidal hatred.

"If someone has that hate and has those feelings and also has poor impulse control and they have other sociopathic tendencies and behaviors, that can be the perfect storm for someone who's at risk for doing these kinds of atrocities," said Daly.

Daly went on to explain that people receive messages of hate as they develop, rather than being born with hatred. People receive these messages through a variety of factors, including their own experiences, role models and peer groups.

He encouraged parents to help prevent hatred in their children by exposing them to a variety of demographics outside of their own as they develop.
