The officials should deal with the problems confronting children after understanding their psychology, said S. Selvaraj, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, Salem City.

He was speaking at a workshop for the benefit of Sub-Inspectors, Child Welfare Officers and police personnel attached to Juvenile Aid Police Unit at the office of the Commissioner of Police in the city on Saturday.

The event was brought up by the Salem Childline YWCA.

Mr. Selvaraj urged the officials to approach the problems of children in the right perspective. They should understand the psychology of the affected children for finding out solution to their problems.

He also underlined the importance of approaching their problems in a child-friendly manner.

Ruby Thiygarajan, Nodal Director, Salem Childline, said that on no account children should be discriminated.

All children should be treated on par and with total affection and dignity.

D. Moses Packianathan, renowned trainer from Chennai, was the resource person and he handled the session on ‘child psychology’. He said that World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared all below 18 years as children. The children’s problems should be approached by understanding their mindset. For understanding their mindset one has to deeply observe children and their functioning.

Anxiety

Mr. Moses said that though both elders and children undergo anxiety and try to experiment each and every thing, children evince more interest than the elders.

Referring to the involvement of children in serious crimes, Mr. Moses said it was mainly due to reasons such as violence against them, the disasters they faced, inability to get what they desired, losing the friendship of loved ones etc.

A.Amalraj, Commissioner of Police, Xavier, Chairperson, Child Welfare Committee, Father Gabriel Don Bosco, Director, and others participated in the programme.

The Salem Childline organised a similar programme for the senior officials in August and has planned one for the officials district police shortly.
