UC Clermont Hosts Panel and Documentary for Domestic Violence Awareness Month

UC Clermont College’s Psychology Program, the YWCA of Greater Cincinnati, along with the Clermont County Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Task Force will hold a screening of HBO’s award-winning documentary, Private Violence, and follow with a panel discussion. The event will take place on Wednesday, October 21, from 2-4 pm in the Snyder Building, Room 142.

“The documentary is one that is directed by UC Alum, Cynthia Hill. The panel discussions afterwards, will address the importance of a coordinated community response to domestic violence and include myself, Dr. Jill Gomez, Assistant Professor and Area Coordinator for Social Work, Amber Malott, YWCA Rural Program Manager, Jennifer Sitler, YWCA House of Peace and Stephanie Ross from the Prosecutor’s Office,” said Associate Professor of Psychology Wanda McCarthy.

Private Violence is a feature-length documentary film and audience engagement campaign that explores a simple, but deeply disturbing fact of American life: the most dangerous place for a woman in America is her own home. Every day in the US, at least four women are murdered by abusive (and often, ex) partners. The knee-jerk response is to ask: “why doesn’t she just leave?” Private Violence shatters the brutality of this logic. (Excerpt from the http://www.privateviolence.com)

The event is free and open to the community. Light refreshments will be served.

This event is sponsored by the UC Clermont College Dean’s Office and the Psychology Program.  If you have questions, please contact Dr. Wanda McCarthy at 558-7404.
