A community psychology lecturer says a police officer's comments about a sexual abuse victim are archaic.

Police have launched an employment investigation into Central District Commander Russell Gibson, after he called a 10-year-old girl a "willing party" to sexual abuse.

Dr Neville Robertson says you'd find this lack of understanding into sexual abuse 20 or 30 years ago, but not today.

"I don't think it's indicative of the police as a whole. But clearly, like any large organisation, there will be people who just do not get it or are frankly misogynist."
