Three kinds of people live in the US — which kind are you?

The nation is divided, and not just about politics and whether it's "pop" or "soda." A study published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology reveals three very different psychological regions clustered within the United States: the friendly and conventional region (blue on the map above), the relaxed and creative region (green) and the temperamental and uninhibited region (orange). The profiles were developed using self-reported information from nearly 1.6 million people, spanning 12 years and 48 states (excluding Hawaii and Alaska). Qualities surveyed included extroversion, agreeableness and neuroticism.

Researchers concluded that personality traits correlate strongly with political views. "In left-leaning regions, it appears that residents are generally open, reserved, and socially distant, whereas in right-leaning regions, residents appear to be friendly, warm, dutiful, and traditional," according to the study.
