Applied Sport Psychophysiology Optimal Performance CE Workshop 2

Thursday, October 4, 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm

Margaret Dupee, University of Ottawa, Tim Herzog, Reaching Ahead, Wes Sime, University of Nebraska, Penny Werthner, University of Ottawa

The workshop will explore applied psychophysiology applications in sport. The overall objective of this workshop is to help attendees understand how biofeedback techniques can be used to improve self-regulation of the nervous system, management of competitive stress and optimization of performance. The target audience is anyone interested in optimal performance. Lectures, case studies, small group discussions, and hands-on use of biofeedback equipment will be the methods used for this workshop.

Margaret Dupee spearheads the graduate research at the University of Ottawa that is helping Olympic athletes capture and keep their mental edge through state-of-the-art anxiety-management training. As stress saps energy, athletes need to keep their body's stress response under control to deliver a top-notch performance when it’s needed. “If you’re at the Olympics and aren’t slotted to compete until the end of the games, you can easily become stressed-out or over-activated. Athletes have to be able to manage that, to self-regulate,” Dupee says.

Penny Werthner, Ph.D. is a former Olympic athlete in Athletics, and is currently the Director and Associate Dean, School of Human Kinetics, University of Ottawa. She works with many Canadian Olympic athletes and coaches, and has been part of helping Canadian athletes win more than 15 Olympic medals in the last few winter and summer Olympic Games.

Another expert at the conference that uses the Thought Technology Infiniti system is Wes Sime, Ph.D. who is Professor Emeritus at University of Nebraska and a health psychologist and sport psychologist at First Step Wellness in Lincoln, Nebraska. He is the originator of the ProGolf concept and has worked with golfers at all levels including the PGA Tour. Dr. Sime uses peak performance measures to enhance focus and concentration under pressure.

Tim Herzog is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor and a Certified Consultant with the Association of Applied Sport Psychology. When asked about the benefits of using biofeedback with his clients, Dr. Herzog replied, "It helps people become more aware of their psychophysiology, enabling more conscious influence in achieving optimal mental and emotional states."
