The psychology of the UNC in defeat*

Numerous have been the commentaries on the response of the UNC, its leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and many of its supporters to the party’s election defeat on September 7.
As far as Mrs Persad-Bissessar herself is concerned there was first of all her refusal to go to Rienzi Complex on election night to address her supporters. Then there was her failure in her concession speech to congratulate Dr Rowley, which was exceedingly churlish behaviour. She then compounded it by claiming she could not remember not congratulating him.
As far as the party was concerned its first reaction to its defeat was to promise fire and brimstone. Deputy political leader, Suruj Rambachan, vowed that “….we will give them thunder”. Another deputy political leader, Roodal Moonilal, also threatened war, stating that when the 18 “warriors” go to Parliament it will be a fight.
