The psychology of stress leave

Most women are aware of the most common physical illnesses that they might be diagnosed with. Breast cancer, the most common cancer in the UK to affect women, with one in eight developing it during their lifetime, is often spoken about widely, but there are other conditions that women are likely to develop that remain taboo.

Mental health conditions and stress can be equally as debilitating as some physical conditions and can lead to prolonged periods of leave or unemployment. Women are often the main source of emotional support within a family; if they are suffering from an emotional or mental health issue themselves, problems can escalate.

A recent report into Stress and Psychological Disorders by the Health and Safety Executive found that there were 135,000 female cases of work-related stress in 2011/2012 compared with 86,000 male cases, which amounted to an estimated 5.8 million lost working days in total amongst females, and 4.6 million amongst men.

On average, each person (both male and female) had 24 days of sick leave from work.

No matter what stage of life a woman is at, if she is affected by stress and takes a leave of absence from work, her mortgage and outgoings still need to be paid every month.

If this can be taken care of by an income protection policy while she is on leave or unemployed, it might actually help to reduce some of the stress and anxiety she is experiencing.
