A new study at the University Of Winnipeg suggests young people who do a lot of texting tend to be more shallow. More than 2,300 first-year psychology students were surveyed online for three consecutive years.
Researcher Doctor Paul Trapnell tells 680 CJOB the experiments seemed to confirm the theory described in The Shallows, a best selling book by Nicholas Carr. The theory was social media like texting and Twitter encourages rapid, relatively shallow thought and very frequent daily use should be associated with moral shallowness.
"The pattern results We got on the self report measures were remarkably consistent with his concerns," says Trapnell.
The U of W study also suggested higher texting frequency is consistently associated with higher levels of ethnic prejudice.
