Teaching Ferguson

As many of us head back to school, events are still unfolding in Ferguson, Missouri.  Protests have been expanding since white police officer Darren Wilson fatally shot unarmed teenager Michael Brown on August 9.  Some young people will know what has been going on, and some will not.  Some will relate to the anger playing out in the streets, and some will not.  Many will not understand the history, politics, sociology, and psychology at work in these days now turning to weeks.

On August 17, Dr. Marcia Chatelain tweeted a call for resources for parents and educators to talk to young people heading back to school with the hashtag #FergusonSyllabus.  She and others began collecting and retweeting responses with resources appropriate for a wide range of levels, from kindergarten to graduate school.  The collection includes books, articles, videos, images, links, authors, and so much more.  It spans history and politics, religion and psychology, recent and not-so-recent U.S. events.

I can’t think of a better back-to-school resource from which so many people can learn.
