Teacher Suspended for Administering Controversial Test

According to published reports, a teacher who brought a controversial test to his Advanced Placement Psychology class at West Caldwell High School has been suspended without pay for three days. The teacher’s name has not been released.

The "Chitling Test" was intended to be part of a discussion regarding cultural bias in testing. The test was developed more than 40 years ago by an African-American Professor to highlight the gap and bias in intelligence tests. It was dismissed by most of the academic community as racist.

The test was given to students Wednesday (April 30). A parent contacted school officials to object to the test. Superintendent Dr. Steve Stone launched an investigation Thursday morning. He called the test a "terrible mistake" and promised to fix the situation.

The teacher will be required to apologize to the class and will undergo sensitivity training.
