Taylor Ordered to Undergo Forensic Exam – WILX

The man charged in the murder of Fireman Dennis Rodeman appeared in court Friday for a pre-conference exam. But, the case against Taylor could be on hold for a while. There

Twenty-two-year-old Grant Taylor appeared by video in court Friday.

His parents sat in the back row, surrounded by a number of Lansing Firefighters, who all watched as Taylor's Defense Attorney petitioned the judge to send her client for an exam at the Center for Forensic Psychology.

"After speaking with Mr. Taylor, your honor, there are some questions as to his competency. So, I would ask that that evaluation be conducted before we proceed further into the case," Stacia Buchanan said.

As News Ten reported last week, Taylor has a history of mental illness. Court documents show diagnoses of bipolar disorder, psychoses and major depression with suicidal thoughts.

The forensic exam team will review that mental health file, interview Taylor and perform a psychological test.

"To determine, 1., Can he assist in his defense, does he understand the proceedings? And then 2., With the criminal responsibility, does he suffer from a mental illness; and if he does, does he appreciate the wrongfulness of his conduct or can he conform his conduct to the requirements of the law?" explained Ingham County Assistant Prosecutor, John Dewane.

The judge and attorneys will review the psychologist's findings to determine if they can move forward with the preliminary exam.

Dewane explained, "If he's deemed that he's not competent to proceed at this time, then he will remain at the Forensics Center, until they can make him competent or provide him the medication and treatment he needs to become competent, so he can assist his attorney with his defense."

And when that happens, Lansing Fire told News Ten, they'll continue to have a presence in court to be there for their fallen brother, Dennis Rodeman.

The Prosecutor said a forensic exam takes several days. The judge has ordered it to be completed within the next three months.

We'll let you know then the test results are in.
