Tackle Two of the Most Popular New Year’s Resolutions: Lose Weight and Save …

Nearly half of all Americans make New Year's resolutions each year, according to a study by the University of Scranton's Journal of Clinical Psychology.  Last year's top resolution was to lose weight, followed by getting organized, saving money and enjoying life to the fullest. TheGroceryGame.com, the largest source for grocery coupons and savings tips online, is helping consumers meet two key resolutions by combining healthy eating with saving money.

"There's a common misperception that buying healthy foods, like fresh produce, means breaking the bank," explains Teri Gault, CEO and founder of The Grocery Game. "What consumers don't realize is that there are many ways to find affordable produce and healthy food products using simple couponing and savings strategies."

Gault offers the following tips on how to simultaneously slim the waist while fattening the wallet:

  1. Vet produce prices by location - Warehouse stores always have great prices on fresh fruits and vegetables, but many prices can be beat. Bring your local grocery store circular into the club store and compare prices on the featured sale produce. Often, the grocery store prices will beat those at the club store.
  2. Go organic when the price is right - Check for deals on organic fresh produce, as they may be on sale when standard produce and brands are not, making organic less expensive.
  3. Try frozen fruit – In the winter, many frozen fruits are much cheaper than fresh fruits—plus, they last longer! Load up on BOGO sales (buy one, get one free) and put frozen fruit into a blender with non-fat yogurt or juice for great low-calorie smoothies.
  4. Stock up on to-go lunches in the frozen food aisle – In January, there are great sales on healthy, low-calorie meals in your grocer's freezer. Stock up and take these to work for days when you don't have time to make a fresh meal in the morning. You'll find savings of $10 or more compared to going out to lunch or eating fast food.
  5. Look for healthy snack alternatives – Food manufacturers have lots of low-fat, high-fiber alternatives that will be on sale with manufacturers' coupons in January. Try baked chips instead of fried, and dip made with plain, non-fat yogurt instead of sour cream. You'll save money and cut down on fat and calories!
  6. Be smart with coupons – Rarely is it more cost-effective to redeem a coupon the same week it is seen in the Sunday paper. Save coupons and redeem them during a sale to save an average of 67% off the full price. You can also download coupons to your club card or print them from the internet. One recent example: Kellogg's Nutri-Grain Cereal Bars (8 ct.) were on sale last week from $4.49 each to $5.00 for two, or $2.50 each. Consumers could get additional savings by stacking on a manufacturer's coupon of $1 off two for a final price of $2.00, which is 55% off!
