Study: Use of Marijuana by teens is not harmful and has no link to …

With years of research and observation, scientists have finally figured out that the chronic and prolonged use of marijuana by the young people is not related to any sort of health conditions. Previously, doctors informed that the use of marijuana at a tender age likely causes depression, asthma or psychotic symptoms in the later years of their lives.

However, a new study suggests the opposite and the findings stated that using marijuana in teen age has no harm. They added that the intake of marijuana has no connection to issues relating to depression, cancer or asthma to its users. The study was published by American Psychological Association, and is contrary to what has been found in the earlier studies.

A test was conducted after pursuing 408 participants from youth into their mid-30s. The research was done on only male participants. The number of participants were all divided into four clusters. One group entailed those who hardly or never smoked marijuana. Participants of the second group used marijuana in their early years, and the third group smoked marijuana in adolescence. The fourth group started smoking marijuana in their late teens and persistently went through to their adulthood.

What researchers established were somewhat shocking. The researchers were unable to find any differences in any of the mental or physical health outcomes that the previous studies suggested, regardless of the intake of volume or regularity of marijuana during adolescence. Jordan Bechtold, lead researcher from University of Pittsburg Medical Center detailed the current findings of the conducted research.

The current claims of marijuana being free from posing a disease threat was supported by the Pittsburg Youth Study of 1980. The study in Psychology of Addictive Behaviors is the extension of the previous one. Their research results suggested that there is no apparent link between smoking marijuana as a teen and later depression, anxiety, allergies, headaches, or high blood pressure.

However, the researchers of the study have also stated that a single study will not be the only podium to look to. Further studies will be conducted to ensure and justify the current one, which in return could contribute to the debate surrounding marijuana legalization.
