A new study you’ll soon see published in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology found a 10-minute review of your Facebook profile can yield can show would-be employers an “unvarnished look” at job candidates.

So that might leave you asking yourself, “What does my social media activity say about my character and job potential? Would anything online eliminate me from the applicant pool?”

Donald Kluemper is a management professor at Northern Illinois University.  He was one of the lead researchers who studied how employers might use Facebook, Twitter and other social media sites to review job applicants.

He told the Chicago Tribune on Monday, “Hiring specialists were just trying to eliminate someone who was doing something inappropriate,” Kluemper said. “What we did is try to assess the personality traits in a similar way that they might be assessed by a standardized test.”

We’ll talk with Kluemper on-air today at 6:45 a.m. about his study and how applicants and human resource workers can protect themselves when it comes to using social media sites in the employment screening process.

I’ll update this post after the interview!
