Students showcase ‘Psyched 2013’ – nation.lk

Psyched’ 2013, a psychological showcase organized by the Aquinas University College, Faculty of Psychology and Counseling was held recently at the university premises. The showcase contained nine stalls representing several fields of psychology including neuroscience, biological psychology, human mind, forensic psychology, social psychology, art therapy, bio psychology, human sexuality and perception, stress and physiological illnesses.

“The exhibition started as an assignment project for the degree class students for the subject counseling practice and that turned out to be this major event,” Sr. Janet Nethisinghe, Lecturer of Counseling Practice said. “Help of the University staff and the enthusiasm of the students helped make this event a success,” she added.

She further explained how practical applications of theories in psychology were essential for students. “Students have also started a counseling center where they practice their skills. It is open for anyone and it’s free of charge,” she said.

Addressing the gathering at the opening ceremony, Guest Lecturer Dr. V Jegaruban stressed the importance of learning Psychology at a degree level and how it helps enhance mental as well as public health of the population. Dr. V Jegaruban is a medical officer attached to the Mental Health division at the Moratuwa District Hospital. He also stressed the importance of popularizing counseling among government institutions. “We can be proud about the health facilities in Sri Lanka when compared with several countries, but not about the mental health facilities. We are far below the required standards,” he said.

Students of the Diploma Level enacted three drama skits on common mental health problems, unawareness of the public, and the repercussion of ignorance about mental health.
Rector of Aquinas University College, Rev Dr. Placidus De Silva was the Chief Guest for the event. Asst. Registrar and Course Coordinator Esmond de Silva, special guests Dr. Sarath Gunasiri Perera, Amalka Edirisinghe and Achini Ranasinghe were also present at the ceremony.
