West Hartford resident graduates From Vista

MADISON Sarah Gabow of West Hartford was among the 15 students who graduated from Vista Vocational Life Skills Center, a nationally accredited non-profit education program for individuals with disabilities. The graduation ceremony was held on Friday, July 10th.

Based in Westbrook and Madison, Conn., Vista provides a range of services and programs to help individuals gain independence and achieve personal success. Continued...

Sarah came to Vista in July 2013 and has focused on strengthening her social skills, vocational skills and pursuing an interest in cosmetology. She is proud to have completed her first cosmetology course and gaining paid employment at a local Big Y supermarket.

Graduation is a monumental occasion that acknowledges the achievements of Vista students who have reached a level of independence and, as a result, graduate from Vista’s Entrance Program— a residential post-secondary program.

Through the Entrance Program, students receive hands-on life skills instruction, vocational training, support and guidance, helping them develop the skills and behaviors needed for adulthood. The next step in their journeys involves living in their own homes or apartments within local communities in Vista’s service area as members of Vista’s Outreach Program. As an Outreach member, Sarah looks forward to planning her upcoming wedding in 2016.

Residents earn dean’s list honors at Saint Joseph’s University

PHILADELPHIA, PA The following residents earned dean’s list honors for the Spring 2015 semester at Saint Joseph’s University. Students must achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or above, a B or greater in all their classes, and complete at least 15 credits to earn dean’s list status for a semester.

Local students named to dean’s list at University of Delaware

NEWARK, DE The following West Hartford students were named to the University of Delaware dean’s list for the spring 2015 semester: Deena Abels, Celia Binder, Rose Clarke, Jonathan Greenfield, Liza Henowitz, Anna Isenstadt, Elizabeth Kenny, Beth Lippman, Matthew Piccone, Caleb Pulda-Rifkin and Alana Waggoner.

Bryan honored at Andover Newton Theological School

NEWTON CENTRE, Mass. Rebecca Michaela Bryan, a resident of West Hartford, was honored for outstanding academic achievements during commencement exercises at Andover Newton Theological School May 16.

Bryan earned the Master of Divinity and was honored with the Unitarian Universalist Association James Luther Adams Award for Excellence in the Study of Liberal Religion. She was nominated for the award by the faculty. The award, established in 2004, is named for the late Andover Newton faculty member and Unitarian parish minister who was the most significant theologian of 20th century Unitarian Universalism.

She also received the Gabriel Fackre Award for Excellence in Constructive Theology, named in 2009 for an emeritus professor of Christian theology. She was nominated for the award by the Rev. Dr. Mark Heim, Samuel Abbot Professor of Christian Theology, and Dr. Benjamin Valentin, Professor of Theology Culture and Director of the Orlando Costas Lectureship in Latino/a Theology .

Bryan was also inducted into Andover Newton’s honors society, the Jonathan Edwards Society, named for the New England pastor and leading theologian of the colonial era. Members were nominated by Dr. Heim and the Rev. Dr. Greg Mobley, Professor of Christian Bible, based on academic prowess and significant contributions in public service.

Rev. Bryan was ordained into the Unitarian Universalist ministry on June 7 at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation of New London, Conn., where she has served as a ministerial intern. She is a consultant for both the New England Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association and the All Souls New London congregation. As of July 1, 2015, Bryan will serve as minister for the Unitarian Universalist Parish of Monson, Mass. She is also president of R. Bryan Associates LLC and lives in West Hartford with her husband, Bart Bracken.

Langan receives alumni award

NEWPORT, R.I. Kara Cunningham Langan of West Hartford, a 1985 graduate of Salve Regina University, was honored with the university’s Alumni Achievement Award during its recent alumni weekend.

Langan received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Salve Regina in 1985. In addition to working at Yale University Hospital early in her career, she has served in home health care, administering medication and IV therapy as well as teaching patients in their homes.

Langan is an avid volunteer and has served as co-chair for several fundraising initiatives including St. Timothy Middle School and Northwest Catholic High School.

Most recently, she served as co-chair for the annual Children’s Charity Ball, which raised $375,000 for The Bridge, a local non-profit organization that provides counseling programs to underserved families and operates teen shelters. Langan has also been involved in Race for the Cure as well as for Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build.

Residents earn dean’s list honors at Saint Joseph’s University

PHILADELPHIA, PA The following residents earned dean’s list honors for the Spring 2015 semester at Saint Joseph’s University. Bryan honored at Andover Newton Theological School

NEWTON CENTRE, Mass. Rebecca Michaela Bryan, a resident of West Hartford, was honored for outstanding academic achievements during commencement exercises at Andover Newton Theological School May 16.

Bryan earned the Master of Divinity and was honored with the Unitarian Universalist Association James Luther Adams Award for Excellence in the Study of Liberal Religion. She was nominated for the award by the faculty. The award, established in 2004, is named for the late Andover Newton faculty member and Unitarian parish minister who was the most significant theologian of 20th century Unitarian Universalism.

She also received the Gabriel Fackre Award for Excellence in Constructive Theology, named in 2009 for an emeritus professor of Christian theology. She was nominated for the award by the Rev. Dr. Mark Heim, Samuel Abbot Professor of Christian Theology, and Dr. Benjamin Valentin, Professor of Theology Culture and Director of the Orlando Costas Lectureship in Latino/a Theology .

Bryan was also inducted into Andover Newton’s honors society, the Jonathan Edwards Society, named for the New England pastor and leading theologian of the colonial era. Members were nominated by Dr. Heim and the Rev. Dr. Greg Mobley, Professor of Christian Bible, based on academic prowess and significant contributions in public service.

Rev. Bryan was ordained into the Unitarian Universalist ministry on June 7 at All Souls Unitarian Universalist Congregation of New London, Conn., where she has served as a ministerial intern. She is a consultant for both the New England Region of the Unitarian Universalist Association and the All Souls New London congregation. As of July 1, 2015, Bryan will serve as minister for the Unitarian Universalist Parish of Monson, Mass. She is also president of R. Bryan Associates LLC and lives in West Hartford with her husband, Bart Bracken.

Langan receives alumni award

NEWPORT, R.I. Kara Cunningham Langan of West Hartford, a 1985 graduate of Salve Regina University, was honored with the university’s Alumni Achievement Award during its recent alumni weekend.

Langan received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Salve Regina in 1985. In addition to working at Yale University Hospital early in her career, she has served in home health care, administering medication and IV therapy as well as teaching patients in their homes.

Langan is an avid volunteer and has served as co-chair for several fundraising initiatives including St. Timothy Middle School and Northwest Catholic High School.

Most recently, she served as co-chair for the annual Children’s Charity Ball, which raised $375,000 for The Bridge, a local non-profit organization that provides counseling programs to underserved families and operates teen shelters. Langan has also been involved in Race for the Cure as well as for Habitat for Humanity’s Women’s Build.
