Sports psychologist Michael Johnson to speak at SC

The Southwestern College psychology speaker series, in cooperation with “Lunches with Leaders,” will feature Michael Johnson from the University of Arkansas Friday, Nov. 15, from noon to 1 p.m., in Mossman 101. Johnson will speak about his career as a sports psychologist.


Johnson joined the University of Arkansas as the athletic department’s director of clinical and sport psychology in the fall of 2013. He is a licensed psychologist who specializes in sport psychology. Additionally, he has extensive experience working with college student-athletes.


Johnson graduated with a bachelor’s degree in economics from Brown University, where he was a four-year letter winner in swimming. His master’s degree (educational psychology, with a minor in measurement and statistics) is from Florida State University, as is his Ph. D. in counseling psychology.


Johnson has been an assistant professor at universities in Texas, Georgia, and Tennessee as he gained experience in working with college student-athletes in areas related to their emotional health and performance enhancement. This experience led to him being appointed as the sport psychologist at Kansas State University almost a year ago. He was hired by the University of Arkansas athletic department to implement the department’s clinical and sport psychology program.

Johnson has published scientific articles that address:

•The relationship between athletic performance and emotions.

•The development of expert athletic performance.

•Multicultural adaptations to the college environment.

•Doping in sport, related to his scientific work addressing doping. Johnson also regularly consults with the World Anti-Doping Agency.

His applied counseling and sport psychology work has involved college student-athletes in swimming, football, baseball, softball, golf, tennis, gymnastics, water polo, equestrian, volleyball, track and field, basketball, soccer, and crew.
