PICTURE this: You've cooked up a stunning meal that you're pretty chuffed with.

Cue smartphone picture and Facebook upload.

It creates a conversation and people comment and "like" it, changing what was an everyday moment into something shared and public.

Was uploading the photo part of a need to feel accepted, to share and make it special, or to stave off boredom?

Gladstone Psychology Services' Daniel Joubert said it depended on the situation.

"One part is the initial thought of why people upload. A lot of that is the social nature - we are trying to say I am here," he said.

"The other… is the concern of whether we should actually do that and the problems that it causes."

Mr Joubert said sometimes Facebook blurred boundaries.

"People sometimes struggle with that it is still a social situation, even though it is electronic, you can see it as an electronic social situation," he said.

"If you have a friendship, there are certain things you share with certain friends or partners or family members or work colleagues, where on Facebook we add so many people of different relationship types that we blur those boundaries. And people don't think about it.

"They have 1000 friends or 500 friends, some of them are work colleagues, some of them are family, some of them are friends and some of them are previous partners or potential partners.

"Where that becomes a bit of a problem is where that gets blurred, and we have to probably ask, 'What do we want to share with you?'"
