Sheffield Hallam University wins women’s science award

Sheffield Hallam University has won a national award for promoting the role of women in science and technology.

The biomedical research and psychology departments picked-up an Athena SWAN award for providing support to female students and academics.

The university said one of its policies is to ensure interview panels have equal numbers of men and women.

The award will allow the biomedical department greater access to research funding.

Prof Nicola Woodroofe, head of biomedical research, said: "We were really delighted because the funding bodies only allow people to apply for funding if their department holds a silver award.

"So for us it was quite important that we got this award because then it opens up opportunities for us."
