Dr. Knowles died of cancer on June 19 at age 69.

Dr. Knowles was born in Columbia, S.C., on Oct. 12, 1944. She graduated from Kentucky Home School in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1961. In 1964, she married O. Harley Wood, with whom she had two children. In 1982, she earned at B.S. in human development at the University of Wisconsin - Green Bay. Moving to Arkansas after a divorce, she earned an M.A. in psychology at the University of Arkansas and completed a Ph.D. in clinical psychology at UA in 1989.

Dr. Knowles had a private practice in Fayetteville until her retirement in 2009.

Dr. Knowles was preceded in death by her parents, William Barnfather Eagles Jr. and Helen Terry. She is survived by her husband, Dr. Eric Stuart Knowles; sister Terry Ann Dow of South Hamilton, Mass.; daughter Elizabeth Wood of Tucson, Ariz., son Tyler Wood of Eugene, Oregon, and stepson Christopher Knowles of Collegeville, Penn.; cousins Nancy and Whitney O'Bannon and Ann Davis of Louisville, Kentucky, and five grandchildren: Tyler Michael Wood-Pavicich, Benjamin Eagles Wood-Pavicich, Liam Petra Wood, Alexander Francis Wood and Sasha Taylor Knowles.
