MACKAY Base Hospital's psychology department is saying no to sexual abuse of children by supporting White Balloon Day's selfie campaign.

White Balloon Day today is part of National Child Protection Week and is Bravehearts' annual event to raise awareness of children affected by sexual assault.

Director of Psychology Rachel Bega said staff were part of the #whoRUprotecting selfie campaign.

"Staff have taken selfies and answered the question who are you protecting? We hope sharing these on social media will raise awareness of the need to protect our children," she said.

Bravehearts statistics show one in five Australian children will be sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday.

"We're encouraging other staff and anyone in Mackay to act for the protection of the children in their lives," said Ms Bega.

"It might be your son or daughter, niece or nephew, grandchildren, students, a friend's child or all Aussie kids," she said.

Ms Bega said MHHS psychologists saw first-hand the terrible impact sexual abuse had on children and adults.

"Sadly, we see people every week who have been sexually abused. Some of these are still children and others are now adults who were abused as children.

"The impact of sexual abuse can have devastating effects on the individual but also on their families and the greater community.

"It's a topic very close to our hearts and we're encouraging everyone to do what they can to raise awareness.

"The challenge is out there for other departments and workplaces in Mackay to also show their support (today)."
